Trump, Putin to meet at Alaska Military Base for Ukraine peace talks
US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin will hold a high-stakes summit Friday at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Alaska, a senior White House official announced Wednesday.
It will be the first one-on-one meeting between the two leaders since their 2018 encounter in Helsinki, and it comes with the ambitious goal of ending the war in Ukraine, now in its fourth year.
The sprawling military installation, located near Anchorage, combines Elmendorf Air Force Base and Fort Richardson Army Post, merged in 2010, and serves as the headquarters for Alaska Command and the Alaskan region of NORAD, the North American Aerospace Defense Command.
The base is a strategic hub where US forces routinely track and intercept Russian aircraft approaching American airspace.
Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022. Since returning to the White House in January, Trump has made securing a peace deal one of his top foreign policy priorities, though multiple rounds of negotiations have so far failed to break the deadlock.
Friday’s meeting is expected to cover not only the Ukraine conflict but also broader security issues, including Arctic military activity and US-Russia strategic stability.
