Trump Moves to Make Bitcoin Tax-Free, White House Confirms

The White House has confirmed that President Donald Trump plans to eliminate capital gains taxes on Bitcoin transactions for everyday purchases.

Announced by White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, the administration is pushing for a “de minimis exemption” on cryptocurrency. This policy change would exempt small transactions—such as buying a cup of coffee or groceries with BTC—from triggering capital gains tax.

Currently, even minor purchases made with appreciated Bitcoin are subject to taxes, making everyday crypto usage complicated and impractical. Under Trump’s new policy, Americans would finally be able to use Bitcoin like digital cash, without fearing a tax bill on every sandwich or ride-share.

“The goal is to make crypto more convenient for average Americans,” Leavitt stated, emphasising the administration’s focus on mainstream adoption.

The announcement coincides with Congress voting today on the high-profile GENIUS Act, a landmark bill aimed at regulating stablecoins and providing clarity for the broader digital asset sector.

The Trump administration is backing the bill and expects it to pass, with a signing ceremony already planned for tomorrow, pending the outcome of the vote.

The GENIUS Act is part of Trump’s broader crypto campaign strategy, which includes positioning the U.S. as the global capital of cryptocurrency innovation. The Act would establish clearer tax rules, enhance investor protections, and support blockchain startups in the country.

Removing the tax on small crypto payments could drive a wave of Bitcoin use in retail, improving its utility far beyond speculative investment. Combined with supportive legislation like the GENIUS Act, this marks one of the most aggressive pro-crypto policy pushes from a U.S. president in history.
