A shot was fired at conservative activist Charlie Kirk during a campus event at Utah Valley University, officials confirmed on Wednesday evening.
Kirk, a close ally of President Donald Trump and founder of the conservative student group Turning Point USA, had been speaking at the university when the incident occurred.
Campus police said a “single shot was fired toward a visiting speaker,” adding that the suspect is now in custody.
Trump, in a post on Truth Social, called for prayers for Kirk.
“We must all pray for Charlie Kirk, who has been shot. A great guy from top to bottom. GOD BLESS HIM!” the president wrote.
Vice-President JD Vance also expressed concern, describing Kirk as “a genuinely good guy and a young father.”
FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed agents were on their way to the scene, pledging the bureau’s full support for the ongoing investigation.
Kirk, 31, has built a strong following among conservative youth, amassing millions of followers on X and TikTok.
His Turning Point USA platform is widely recognised for hosting open-air debates and promoting conservative ideas across college campuses.
Kirk’s current condition has yet to be ascertained.
