Truck Kills Man Attempting To Cross Expressway In Lagos
A tragic accident claimed the life of a pedestrian over the weekend at Ojota, Lagos, after he was struck by a truck while attempting to cross the expressway unlawfully.
THE WHISTLER learnt that the unidentified man ignored the designated pedestrian bridge and tried to dash across the Ojota expressway when he was hit by the truck travelling along the main carriageway.
The impact of the collision proved fatal, leading to his death on the spot.
Confirming the incident on Sunday, the spokesperson of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Mr Adebayo Taofiq, said in a desperate attempt to flee the scene, the truck driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a Toyota Corolla.
LASTMA officials at the scene acted swiftly, apprehending the fleeing driver and securing the vehicle.
Both the driver and the vehicle were handed over to officers of the Ogudu Police Division for further investigation and legal action.
“Preliminary findings indicate that the fatal collision occurred as the lorry was transiting the Ojota main carriageway, where it encountered the pedestrian in breach of crossing regulations. In a futile bid to flee the scene, the lorry driver lost vehicular control and subsequently collided with a Toyota Corolla, identified by registration number LND 905 HN.
“LASTMA personnel, demonstrating commendable swiftness and efficiency, apprehended the fleeing driver and secured the vehicle. Both were handed over to operatives of the Ogudu Police Division for comprehensive investigation and appropriate legal action,” Adebayo said in a statement.
According to him, the body of the deceased was transferred to officials of the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU).
Reacting to the incident, LASTMA’s General Manager, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy.
He extended his condolences to the deceased’s family and stressed the critical importance of using pedestrian bridges.
“It is both reckless and unlawful to ignore the infrastructural provisions made for pedestrian safety,” Bakare-Oki said.
“The Lagos State Government has invested significantly in pedestrian bridges, and it is incumbent upon all road users to utilise them conscientiously.”
He urged the public to strictly adhere to traffic safety rules, warning that disregard for such protocols puts not only the violator but also other road users at risk.
Bakare-Oki called for collective vigilance and compliance to prevent further needless tragedies.
