Truck Accidents: Anambra Police Engage Drivers Over Increased Deaths
The police in Anambra are concerned about the increasing number of deaths caused by truck accidents in the state and have engaged with the drivers’ union to discuss strategies for preventing future occurrences.
The decision to engage the union followed a recent accident on March 15, at the Upper Iweka axis of Onitsha involving a truck that reportedly lost control and rammed into pedestrians.
Two tricycles and a commercial bus full of passengers were involved in the accident, which reportedly resulted in the death of at least six people.
An undisclosed number of others reportedly sustained various degrees of injuries.
To avert future accidents, the Anambra Police Commissioner, Ikioye Orutugu, met with truck union members on Wednesday.
Present at the meeting include the Commander Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Anambra, JN Alexander, Tipper drivers/Owners, the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of 29 Squadron of Mobile Police Base, and some divisional Police Officers in the Command.
The CP stated that the Police, FRSC and other relevant agencies are to collaborate and implement necessary cautionary measures for the Drivers and Owners of trucks.
He highlighted relevant strategies to be considered to include conducting risk assessments by identifying potential hazards and taking steps to minimise them.
The CP called for regular vehicle inspections to ensure that trucks are in good working condition to prevent accidents caused by mechanical failure.
The CP emphasized the need to educate drivers on safe driving practices and the importance of adhering to traffic regulations.
