Security operatives under Operation Safe Haven, currently executing Operation Lafiyan Jama’a, have arrested a man suspected to be a kidnapper along the Wamba–Jos highway in Kaduna State.

Major Samson Zhakom, the military spokesperson, said in a statement shared with journalists that the suspect was caught in possession of a staggering ₦13,742,000 in cash and a small arsenal of weapons.

“On Wednesday, 9th July 2025, troops of the operation mounted snap checkpoints along Wamba–Jos Road at Agameti, in Sanga Local Government Area of Kaduna State.”

The team, while on routine patrol, flagged down a Volkswagen vehicle with registration number JJN 336 YZ. It had three men inside. However, the situation quickly escalated.

“Two of the occupants suddenly alighted from the vehicle and fled shortly before reaching the checkpoint,” Zhakom revealed.

What remained was a single occupant—now in custody—and a vehicle with visible bullet holes and bloodstains. The suspect reportedly tried to bribe the troops, but they turned it down.

A full search of the vehicle and suspect led to the discovery of two AK-47 rifles, two AK-47 magazines, 30 rounds of 7.62mm (special) ammunition, three mobile phones, one knife, a football, assorted charms, torchlight and ₦13,742,000 in cash.

During questioning, the suspect allegedly admitted to being part of a gang involved in kidnappings along the Jos–Makurdi axis.

“He confessed to being responsible for kidnapping activities along Jos–Makurdi Road and agreed to lead troops to their hideout,” Zhakom said.

However, while leading the troops, the suspect allegedly made a desperate attempt to grab a soldier’s weapon and escape.

“He attempted to disarm own troops and was neutralised,” the spokesperson confirmed.

Troops say follow-up operations are now underway to track down other members of the gang.

“We remain committed to protecting lives and rooting out criminal elements wherever they are,” Zhakom added.
