Liverpool’s Diogo Jota Tragically Dies in Car Accident
Liverpool forward Diogo Jota has tragically passed away in a car accident.
The 28-year-old Portuguese striker lost his life in a crash near Zamora, northwestern Spain, in the early hours of Thursday.
According to reports, his brother, André, also died in the incident on the A-52 Rías Baixas Highway near Palacios de Sanabria, en route to Benavente.
The Guardia Civil in Zamora informed Sky Sports News that the accident occurred at approximately 12:30 a.m.
“A vehicle veered off the roadway, likely due to a tire blowout during an overtaking manoeuvre,” they stated.
“The car subsequently caught fire, resulting in the deaths of both occupants. Pending forensic confirmation, one of the deceased is believed to be Diogo Jota, a Liverpool FC player, and his brother, André Felipe.”
This tragedy comes just 10 days after Jota’s marriage to his longtime partner, Rute Cardoso.
He is survived by his wife and three children.
Jota began his career in Portugal, followed by a stint with Atlético Madrid in Spain, before moving to England.
He joined Liverpool from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020.
Jota was a key contributor during his five-year tenure with the Reds, notably scoring six goals in their most recent Premier League title-winning campaign.
A passionate gamer, Jota owned an eSports team and was an active Twitch streamer.
His brother, André, aged 26, was a player for Penafiel in Portugal’s second division.
