Trade War: China Urges Dialogue With U.S

China has called on the United States to engage in dialogue to address escalating trade tensions between both nations.

Speaking at a weekly news conference on Thursday, commerce ministry spokeswoman, He Yongqian, emphasized Beijing’s commitment to a constructive approach to resolving the issues.

“China has always believed that economic and trade disputes between China and the United States should be handled with a positive and cooperative attitude,” she said.

However, Yongqian stressed that discussions must be rooted in “mutual respect, equality, and mutual benefit,” warning that “threats and intimidation can only be counterproductive”.

“It is hoped that the United States and China will work together… to return to the correct track of resolving issues through dialogue and consultation,” she said.

Trade tensions have intensified since the U.S. President Donald Trump resumed office in January. His administration has imposed tariffs on major trading partners and allies, including China, Canada, and Mexico.

These tariffs, according to the Trump administration, were imposed to reduce the inflow of fentanyl and related precursor chemicals into the U.S. through these countries.

Earlier this month, Trump increased a previously imposed 10% tariff on Chinese imports to 20%. In response, Beijing announced tariffs of up to 15% on US agricultural products, including soybeans, pork, and chicken.

On Wednesday, Trump imposed a sweeping 25% duty on all steel and aluminum imports into the country.

China, who is the world’s largest steel producer in response, vowed on Wednesday to take “all necessary measures” to safeguard its interests.

Similarly, the European Union (EU) on Wednesday, announced its decision to impose retaliatory tariffs on the United States, targeting $28bn worth of American exports, including bourbon, motorcycles, and boats industries deeply connected to key US regions.

EU president Ursula von der Leyen labeled the US tariffs as “unjustified” and warned of further escalation if Washington does not reverse its decision.

The new EU tariffs, set to take effect in April, are designed to apply pressure on industries in states that have historically supported Trump’s policies.

Also, Canada, one of US closest allies, announced retaliatory tariffs on nearly C$30bn worth of American imports.

The Canadian government said it will be following a “dollar-by-dollar” approach and institute 25% tariffs on American imports, including steel, computers and sports equipment.
