Tinubu’s Appointments Guided By ‘Fairness, Tenets Of Justice’ — SGF
The federal government has said President Bola Tinubu remains committed to fairness, equity, and national unity amid criticism over the composition of federal appointments under the current administration.
On Friday, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation refuted allegations of lopsidedness in Tinubu’s recent appointments.
According to the SGF, all appointments under Tinubu are made in strict compliance with the federal character principle as enshrined in Section 14 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
“It is notable to mention that His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, believes strongly in the unity of Nigeria and is guided by the ideals of fairness and tenets of justice in all appointments,” read a statement by the SGF’s Director of Information and Public Relations, Segun Imohiosen.
The SGF stressed that the current administration remains dedicated to ensuring that all regions and demographics are adequately represented in national institutions and agencies.
Last week, the presidency faced backlash on social media over perceived favouritism towards the South West in Tinubu’s appointments.
The criticisms worsened after the release of an inaccurate list of political appointees intended to demonstrate balanced representation in Tinubu’s appointments.
Senator Ali Ndume of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), representing Borno South, had accused the president of breaching the federal character principle during an interview on Arise Television.
“My allegiance to the party will not stop me from demanding accountability,” Ndume had said.
In an attempt to address the concerns, the Presidency released a breakdown of appointments by geo-political zones, citing 29 appointees from the South West, 35 from the North West, 22 from the South-South, 16 from the South East, 25 from the North Central, and 24 from the North East.
However, some Nigerians faulted the omission of some appointments, such as the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, from the list.
Presidential spokesperson Sunday Dare was forced to apologise for inaccuracies in the list via a post on X (formerly Twitter).
“We have noticed a number of errors in the list of appointments tweeted. We are sorry. We will provide an updated list later. Thank you,” he wrote.
