Tinubu Travels To Lagos For ECOWAS 50th Anniversary Celebration
President Bola Tinubu will depart Abuja on Tuesday for Lagos State to join other regional leaders in celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
The golden jubilee celebrations for the West African economic bloc were initially launched in Accra last month.
The Lagos events will include a reenactment of the historic 1975 ECOWAS declaration at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs in Victoria Island.
Tinubu, who currently serves as Chairman of ECOWAS, will highlight the economic bloc’s major achievements during a ceremony at Eko Hotels and Suites, said presidential spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga.
Professor Bolaji Akinyemi, Chairman of the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs and former Minister of External Affairs, will present a comprehensive review of ECOWAS’s five-decade journey.
Following his presentation, panellists at the institute will provide detailed analysis of the bloc’s evolution and impact.
General Yakubu Gowon (Rtd), the only surviving Head of State who signed the original ECOWAS declaration, will participate in all ceremonies and deliver a keynote speech at the Eko Hotels venue.
Dr Omar Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission, will provide the welcome address for the celebrations.
During his stay in Lagos, President Tinubu will also commission some infrastructure projects on Saturday, May 31.
They include Section I of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, the Lekki Deep Sea Port Tax Credit Concrete Road, and the 7th Axial Road. The President will also flag off Section II of the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway during the same ceremony.
Tinubu will also virtually commission the Kano-Kanwar-Danja-Hadejiya Section II Road and Yakasai-Zalli Road. He will also virtually flag off the Kano Northern By-pass, Zaria-Hunkuyi-Dabai Section I, Dabai-Kafur Malumfashi, and Malumfashi-Dayi-Yashe-Gidan Mutum Daya Section III projects.
Before returning to Abuja, President Tinubu will observe the Eid-el-Kabir prayers at the State House, Dodan Barracks in Lagos.
