Tinubu to commission 6,000MT Lithium processing plant in Nasarawa

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is expected to commission a newly completed 6,000-metric-tonne lithium processing plant in Nasarawa State, Governor Abdullahi Sule has disclosed.

Speaking to State House correspondents after a closed-door meeting with the President in Abuja, Governor Sule explained that the facility, built by a Chinese investor, has just been completed and is now ready for official unveiling.

“Mr. President has assured us that upon his return from his short vacation, he will come to Nasarawa to commission the project.

“This plant represents another milestone in our efforts to unlock the economic potential of our solid minerals sector,” Sule said.

The governor recalled that in 2024, a 3,000-metric-tonne lithium processing plant was commissioned in Nasarawa Local Government Area, a project that attracted additional investors after confirming the state’s high-quality lithium deposits.

“Last year, we commissioned a 3,000MT capacity plant. What we are seeing now is a direct result of investor confidence.

“Another group of investors, impressed by both the quality and commercial quantity of lithium in Nasarawa, have successfully completed the 6,000MT facility,” he noted.

Sule described the project as a strategic step in Nigeria’s drive to industrialise its solid minerals sector, reduce raw mineral exports, and create local value chains.

Lithium, a key component in rechargeable batteries used for electric vehicles and renewable energy storage, has become one of the most sought-after minerals globally.

With the growing global demand, the Nasarawa project is expected to boost Nigeria’s position in the international market while creating jobs and stimulating economic growth in the state.
