Tinubu In London For Meeting Called By King Charles III
President Bola Tinubu met with King Charles III at Buckingham Palace in London on Wednesday.
According to the presidency, the meeting was held at the behest of the British monarch to discuss “global and regional matters of shared priority, focusing on the urgent and complex challenge of climate change”.
The meeting, their second since the COP 28 climate change summit in Dubai in 2023, came ahead of the COP 29 Summit in Azerbaijan and the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Samoa.
During their discussions, President Tinubu reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to addressing climate change.
A statement by presidential aide, Bayo Onanuga, said “President Tinubu reiterated Nigeria’s firm commitment to addressing climate change in a manner that aligns with the country’s energy security objectives whilst affirming Nigeria’s readiness to adopt global strategies for sustainability.
“During their dialogue, the two leaders shared ideas for innovative approaches to climate financing and funding, expressing mutual interest in strengthening partnerships by harnessing Nigeria’s leadership position in Africa and the Commonwealth.”
To address climate challenges, several pledges were made outside formal negotiations at COP28 held between November and December, 2023, in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
They include pledges on fossil fuels, methane, renewables, food, deforestation, and health.
Commitments were also made to the Green Climate Fund, Least Developed Countries Fund, Special Climate Fund, and the Adaptation Fund.
The United Kingdom committed $2bn to the Green Climate Fund at the G20 in September, and made further financial commitments to bilateral packages and research projects.
Over 100 countries, including the UK, committed to boosting renewable energy in the Global Renewables and Energy Efficiency Pledge, co-launched by the EU and the COP28 Presidency.
The COP 28 presidency also launched the Oil and Gas Decarbonisation Charter, in which major stakeholders across the oil and gas sector committed to decarbonising direct emissions and reducing methane. This was endorsed by 51 companies representing 40% of global oil production.32
COP29 will be held from November 11 to 22, 2024. The climate conference will tackle the urgent challenge of limiting global warming to 1.5°C.
The summit’s primary focus will be on boosting investment in climate action, enhancing national commitments, and operationalisation of the Loss and Damage Fund, aimed at supporting vulnerable countries.
