Three teenagers drown in Bauchi river
Tragedy struck in Jinkiri Village, Tirwun—a suburb of Bauchi metropolis—on Wednesday, as three teenagers drowned in a river.
DAILY POST reports that the incident mirrors a similar occurrence in May when four staff of the Gubi Water Treatment Company drowned during a routine maintenance exercise.
Confirming the latest incident, spokesperson of the Bauchi Police Command, SP Ahmed Wakil identified the victims as Habibu Mohammed (16), Abubakar Mohammed (16), and Zailani Sule (14), all from Durum village.
“The teenagers drowned while swimming in the river after engaging in mining work,” Wakil stated.
He said the incident occurred around 1:00 p.m. and that all efforts to save the boys proved unsuccessful as they were declared dead on arrival at the hospital.
“Preliminary investigations suggest the boys went swimming shortly after mining. The Bauchi State Police Command under Commissioner of Police, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, extends heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and emphasizes the need for greater caution around water bodies, especially during adverse weather conditions,” Wakil added.
Police say investigations are ongoing. The bodies have been released to the families for burial after an examination at the Bauchi State Specialist Hospital.
