Three Swimmers Killed By Suspected Russian Explosives In Ukrainian Beach

Three people have died after suspected Russian explosives detonated while they were swimming in banned areas along Ukraine’s southern Odesa coastline, authorities confirmed on Sunday.

Odesa regional governor Oleh Kiper said the victims, a man in Karolino-Buhaz and a man and woman in nearby Zatoka, were swimming in prohibited zones when the explosions occurred.

Both locations lie down the coast from the city of Odesa.

“All of them were blown up by explosive objects while swimming in prohibited recreational zones,” Kiper stated, warning that such incidents show the deadly risk of entering unmonitored waters.

The Black Sea coast, once a major summer tourist attraction, has reportedly been heavily mined since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, thereby endangering locals and visitors.

Ukrainian authorities have repeatedly cautioned against swimming in unsafe areas.

According to Kiper, 32 swimming zones have been certified as safe across the region, with 30 of them located within Odesa city limits.
