President of Nigeria Weightlifting Federation (NWF), Dr Ibrahim Abdul.

President of Nigeria Weightlifting Federation (NWF), Dr Ibrahim Abdul, Chimdi Ejiogu, and Lawrence Iquaibom have been elected as members of the Weightlifting Federation of Africa.

The election was held on Wednesday at the end of the body’s Congress at the ongoing African Weightlifting Championship.

Ejiogu, a former president of NWF, retained his position as the vice president of the WFA.

In a move that highlights Nigeria’s growing influence in global weightlifting, Dr Ibrahim is now the Chairman of the Marketing Commission for WFA, while Lawrence Iquaibom, a former Olympian and current Technical Official of the International Weightlifting Federation, has been elected as a member of the Technical Committee of the Weightlifting Federation of Africa.

Coach Iquaibom, a retired Director of Sports in the Akwa Ibom State Civil Service, was elected on Wednesday in Mahebourg, Mauritius, at the ongoing African Weightlifting Congress.

The top officials and stakeholders from across the continent came together at the Congress to discuss the future of weightlifting in Africa.

Iquaibom was delighted with the opportunity to serve on the board of the Weightlifting Federation of Africa.

He said, “This forms part of my happy moments in weightlifting. I feel fulfilled that I am elevated in a sport I have committed myself to, and this will help me contribute to the development of weightlifting in Nigeria, Africa and globally.”

Similarly, Mr Khaled Mhalhel from Libya was re-elected as President of the Weightlifting Federation of Africa, while South African Dr Kevin Duploy was elected as the 1st Vice President.

Other elected members of the Technical Committee are Mr John Ogolla from Kenya, Mr Horst Sayler from Swatini and Mr Faried from Morocco.
