Threat On Peter Obi: Silence Morka Before He Destroys Democracy, Group Tells APC

Felix Morka, the National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC)

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has strongly denounced the recent threat made by Felix Morka, the National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), against Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections.

The association described Morka’s comments as a grave threat to democracy, freedom of speech, and the safety of opposition voices in Nigeria.

Morka, during a live television program, reportedly stated that Peter Obi “has crossed the line so many times and has what’s coming to him, and whatever he gets, he should manage it.”

HURIWA expressed outrage over this statement, noting that such language is unbecoming of a democratic society and signals a worrying shift toward authoritarianism.

According to HURIWA, Morka’s remarks are indicative of a dangerous mindset that seeks to stifle dissent and silence criticism of the government.

The association called for his immediate arrest and investigation, stating that his words constituted a direct threat to Obi’s life and violated the principles of democracy and free expression.

“Nigeria is not a one-party state,” HURIWA declared. “The APC does not own Nigeria; the people do. The president is elected as a servant of the people and not their ruler.

“Citizens have the inalienable right to criticize policies and decisions of any government without fear of intimidation or threats.”

HURIWA emphasized that freedom of speech is a fundamental human right enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution and international conventions to which the country is a signatory.

The association stressed that criticizing government policies is not an attack on the nation but a legitimate exercise of democratic rights.

The association also highlighted a disturbing pattern of behaviour by Morka, alleging that he has consistently reacted to criticisms of the government with inflammatory statements that undermine Nigeria’s democratic ethos.

“Reportedly, this is not the first time Morka has attempted to muzzle dissent. He appears to operate as though the APC owns Nigeria and its citizens,” HURIWA stated.

“His behaviour is more suited to an authoritarian regime, not a democratic society.”

HURIWA called on the APC leadership to take immediate disciplinary action against Morka, including his removal as the party’s spokesperson.

“By failing to act, the APC risks being seen as endorsing these undemocratic actions, which tarnish its credibility and the image of the current administration,” the group warned.

Furthermore, HURIWA demanded that security agencies investigate Morka’s remarks and compel him to sign an undertaking to ensure Peter Obi’s safety.

“This is a matter of national security and justice,” HURIWA asserted. “If anything happens to Peter Obi, Felix Morka and the APC leadership must be held accountable.”

The association also reiterated the importance of protecting opposition voices in a democracy. “Opposition leaders like Peter Obi are essential for fostering accountability and improving governance,” HURIWA noted.

“Silencing them with threats and intimidation undermines the very foundation of democracy.”

HURIWA expressed deep concern over the growing climate of fear and repression under the current administration, urging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to distance himself from such actions and ensure that freedom of speech and democratic principles are upheld.

“The president must remember that he is a servant of the people, not their master,” HURIWA stated.

“His administration must prioritize dialogue and engagement over intimidation and repression. A government that silences its critics is not a government for the people.”

HURIWA concluded by urging Nigerians and the international community to remain vigilant and resist any attempts to erode democratic freedoms.

“The survival of Nigeria’s democracy depends on the protection of free speech and the rights of all citizens, regardless of political affiliation,” the group emphasized.

“Let us not allow intimidation to become the norm in our beloved country.”

As tensions rise over Morka’s remarks, HURIWA’s call for action serves as a stark reminder of the importance of preserving democratic values and protecting those who dare to speak truth to power.
