Former Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey has been granted bail after appearing in court on repeated rape claims that have plagued his career in recent months.
The 32-year-old Ghanaian international appeared in a closed-door hearing at a London court on Monday, where he was formally accused in connection with three separate alleged incidents involving two women.
Due to the delicate nature of the case, the court proceedings were kept mostly under wraps and away from the prying media, with some details subject to legal restrictions.
The claims against the talented Ghanaian footballer were first made public in 2022, sparking heated conjecture in the media and on the internet about his person.
At the time, reports indicated that the footballer had been questioned by police but not charged. However, following months of investigation, the Crown Prosecution Service finally filed official charges, resulting in the court appearance.
The charges stem from alleged incidents that occurred between 2021 and 2022, all while Partey was playing for Arsenal in the Premier League. The identities of the alleged victims are still protected under UK law.
During the court hearing, Partey was granted bail with stringent requirements, such as turning in his passport, avoiding foreign travel, and frequently checking in with the police. According to his legal team, he is innocent, and they are confident that he will be exonerated of all allegations.
“Thomas maintains his complete innocence and will continue to cooperate fully with the legal process,” a member of his legal team told reporters. “We urge the public and the media to respect the presumption of innocence.”
