TCN Sets 12-Month Delivery Target For Kano Transmission Line Upgrade

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has flagged off a major reconductoring project in Kano, setting a 12-month delivery target for the upgrade of the ageing Kumbotso-Dakata 132kV double-circuit transmission line.

According to a statement issued in Abuja by the General Manager, Public Affairs, Mrs Ndidi Mbah, the project aims to significantly boost power transmission reliability across Northern Nigeria, especially in key industrial hubs.

She said the scope of the project includes replacing the current Aluminum Conductor Steel Reinforced (ACSR) dog conductors with high-capacity Aluminum Conductor Composite Core (ACCC) Silvassa conductors.

She added that it also involves the installation of Optical Ground Wire (OPGW) for enhanced communication and real-time monitoring, along with the deployment of composite polymer insulators designed for harsh environmental conditions.

“This line has been a major bottleneck affecting supply to strategic industrial areas like the Dakata Industrial Zone and the upcoming Walalambe transmission substation,” Mbah stated.

Speaking during the inauguration, TCN’s General Manager of Transmission Services, Mr. Ali Sharifai, described the project as more than just infrastructure renewal.

“It is about restoring confidence in the transmission network and empowering industries and communities with reliable electricity,” he said.

Sharifai noted that the initiative is part of TCN’s broader strategy to strengthen Nigeria’s power infrastructure and support regional economic development.

He also highlighted similar ongoing projects, including the reconductoring of the Kankia–Katsina 132kV transmission line, which is expected to be completed within five to six weeks, and the upgrade of key transmission lines in Port Harcourt to improve line capacity and minimize power interruptions.

“Since 2020, TCN has completed 22 transmission projects nationwide. These include the construction of four new 132kV substations and the upgrade of 15 existing substations with higher-capacity transformers and modern equipment.

“TCN remains committed to contributing meaningfully to Nigeria’s economic and social development through critical transmission infrastructure,” he said.
