Taraba varsity SSANU gives Gov Kefas two weeks to honour agreement or face strike

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU, Taraba State University, TSU, chapter, has issued a two-week ultimatum to Governor Agbu Kefas and the university management to address outstanding agreements contained in a Memorandum of Action, MoA, or risk a total and indefinite strike.

The warning, which was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the union’s congress, was jointly signed by its chairperson, Comrade Bitrus Joseph Ajibauka, and secretary, Mamki Joshua Atein.

SSANU accused the state government of failing to honour the MoA reached on January 25, 2025, which stipulated that a meeting with union leaders would be held by the first week of February to develop a payment plan for pending arrears.

Describing the delay as a “clear violation” of the agreement’s tenets, the union said the government’s inaction could trigger the resumption of the strike it suspended on January 26, 2025, after more than a month of industrial action.

SSANU’s demands include the payment of outstanding September and October 2022 salaries; settlement of withheld portions of June, November, and December 2022 salaries; payment of 90% of accumulated Earned Administrative Allowances (EAA); and activation of the approved State-Defined Pension Scheme for TSU staff, including benefits for deceased and retired employees.

The communiqué also noted that a reminder letter was sent to the state government on February 14, 2025, but no action was taken.

“The inaction of the Taraba State government and the University Management is a clear violation of the MoA.

Failure to meet our demands within two weeks from August 7 will leave the union with no choice but to resume the earlier suspended strike,” the communiqué read.

If the ultimatum expires without resolution, SSANU said it will act “in line with its constitution and extant laws.”
