Taraba residents urged to report violations of religious freedom
Residents of Taraba State and Nigerians across the country have been urged to report any violations of their right to freedom of religion or belief.
The call is said to be part of ongoing efforts to safeguard human rights and promote peaceful coexistence.
The call was made in Jalingo, the state capital, during the screening of Bridging the Abyss, a documentary that explores the significance of promoting and protecting freedom of religion or belief (PP-FoRB).
Held at Shield Hotel in the Jalingo metropolis on Monday, the event, which attracted students from various tertiary institutions across the state, was organised by Search for Common Ground (SFCG), with support from the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Addressing participants, SFCG’s Senior Media Officer, Katlong Dasat, described freedom of religion or belief as a fundamental human right enshrined in international law.
“Millions of people around the world still suffer discrimination, harassment, and violence because of their religious beliefs,” Dasat stated.
Gaius Dachet, Project Manager at SFCG, noted that religious freedom is essential not only as a matter of faith but also for peace, security, and sustainable development.
He emphasised that protecting these rights could help prevent conflicts both in Taraba State and nationwide.
The students were encouraged to report any violations of their religious rights and were provided with a toll-free helpline, 0800-000-2233, for confidential reporting of cases involving discrimination or persecution on religious grounds.
“If you are facing discrimination or violations of your beliefs, call the toll-free line. It is confidential and free,” Dasat assured the audience.
Several students and other participants who spoke with our correspondent commended the initiative and pledged to share the knowledge gained with their peers and communities.
Panellists at the event, many of whom were university lecturers, also urged participants to actively spread awareness about religious freedom and promote tolerance within their various environments.
