Suspected Transformer Vandal Electrocuted At Borno University
A lifeless body of a yet-to-be-identified male was discovered on Sunday near a transformer inside Borno State University, Maiduguri.
In a statement confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Borno State Police Command, ASP Nahum Daso, said preliminary findings indicated that the man was electrocuted while attempting to vandalise electrical installations within the institution.
“The Borno State Police Command wishes to inform the public that today, 7/9/2025, the body of an unidentified male was discovered near a transformer in Borno State University, Maiduguri. Preliminary investigations revealed that the deceased was electrocuted in an attempt to vandalise electrical installations,” the statement read.
According to Daso, operatives of the Command, working with the Borno State Fire Service, evacuated the body to the hospital for proper medical procedures.
He noted that a full-scale investigation into the matter had commenced.
Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Abdulmajid, PSC, warned against acts of sabotage and vandalism, stressing that such activities not only endanger the perpetrators but also compromise public safety.
“Once again, we warn criminal elements to desist from acts of vandalism and sabotage, as such endanger lives and compromise public safety,” he cautioned.
Daso reassured residents of the Command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property, urging the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements around critical infrastructure to the nearest police station.
THE WHISTLER reports that the development comes amid calls by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) for stiffer penalties against vandals targeting critical national assets.
On September 1st, the NSCDC Commandant of the Federal Capital Territory Command, Dr. Olusola Odumosu, decried the rising rate of repeat offences among suspects arrested for vandalism.
He attributed the trend to what he described as “lenient court sentences that fail to deter criminal activity.”
