Supreme Court Holds Valedictory Session For Late Justice Ogwuegbu May 14
The Supreme Court of Nigeria will on Wednesday, May 14, hold a special valedictory court session in honour of the late Justice Emmanuel Obioma Ogwuegbu, who passed away in October 2024 at the age of 91.
The session is scheduled to take place at 2:00 p.m. in the Main Courtroom of the Supreme Court. It will be attended by dignitaries, including the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria.
According to a statement issued on Sunday by Dr. Festus Aweneri Akande, the Court’s Director of Information and Public Relations, the late jurist died peacefully in his sleep on October 28, 2024.
Born on March 16, 1933, in Amainyi, Ihitte-Uboma Local Government Area of Imo State, Justice Ogwuegbu rose from humble beginnings to become a towering figure in Nigeria’s legal system.
He was appointed as a judge of the Imo State High Court in November 1976 and served as Administrative Judge in both the Owerri and Aba Judicial Divisions.
He was elevated to the Court of Appeal in September 1987, where he served in the Ibadan and Lagos Divisions. In April 1992, he was appointed to the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
In recognition of his exemplary service and judicial acumen, Justice Ogwuegbu was seconded to the Supreme Court of The Gambia from December 1999 to 2002.
Upon completion of his assignment abroad, he returned to Nigeria and continued his service at the Supreme Court until his retirement on March 16, 2003.
The valedictory session will be presided over by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Hon. Justice Kudirat Motonmori Olatokunbo Kekere-Ekun, who, along with other notable figures in the judiciary, will pay tribute to the late Justice Ogwuegbu for his invaluable contributions to the legal profession.
