Super Falcons Defeat South Africa To Qualify For WAFCON Final
The Super Falcons recorded a last-minute 2-1 victory over South Africa on Tuesday to qualify for the final of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.
Nigeria recorded a stunning performance to send the defending champions of the competition packing while also earning revenge after losing to the Bayana Bayana in the group stage in 2022.
Justine Madugu-led side dominated the first half but South Africa’s goalkeeper was on top of her game to deny Nigeria and Bambanani Mbane produced a stunning goal-line clearance to keep the score goalless.
However, Super Falcons captain Rasheedat Ajibade, opened the scoring from the penalty spot on the stroke of half time to give the team a 1-0 lead.
The Bayana Bayana came out of the second half with intent, and purpose and they equalised in the 60th minute from the penalty spot after Osinachi Ohale fouled Linda Motlhalo.
The goal galvanized South Africa as Osinachi Ohale cleared a goal-bound effort off the line before Jermaine Seoposenwe missed the target from a good position.
Michelle Alozie was the heroine for Nigeria in the 94th minute with a stunning goal that sealed the team’s place in the final of the competition.
She launched a long ball into the South African box, which evaded everyone, including the goalkeeper and sailed into the net to the surprise of the South Africans.
The Super Falcons have only conceded one goal in the competition, winning four and drawing one out of their five games so far.
Nigeria will now take on the winner between Ghana and Morocco in the final on Saturday.
