Super Falcons Captain Emphasizes Unwavering Determination Ahead of South Africa Showdown
Rasheedat Ajibade, the captain of the Super Falcons, has stressed the team’s dedication to winning as they get ready for their eagerly awaited semi-final matchup against reigning champions South Africa in the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
Despite not saying “we must not lose,” Ajibade’s remarks make it apparent that the Super Falcons intend to continue their incredible run and fulfil their ultimate objective of winning a record-extending 10th WAFCON championship, known as “Mission X.”
Ajibade emphasised the team’s high standards and ongoing improvement after they defeated Zambia 5-0 in the quarterfinals. “Since the beginning of this tournament, it has been incredibly difficult to play without giving up a goal. As the game went on, we continued to improve despite our slow start,” she said.
As they prepare for the pivotal game against their opponents, Ajibade emphasised the value of consistent effort and concentration, saying, “We have to keep working hard, keep the focus high, keep the energy high in the team, and ensure we’re giving our best every game.”
She also emphasised the wider significance of their performance, especially for upcoming generations of Nigerian football players. “We want to keep making history for ourselves as players because we want to set a standard for those coming behind us,” she stated.
This attitude suggests that beating a formidable opponent like South Africa would be a “drop in the bar” and would not be consistent with the high standards they seek to establish.
