Speeding driver dies as car rams into stationary bus in Lagos

A lone driver lost his life in the early hours of Monday, when his Toyota Highlander collided with a commercial bus that had stopped illegally to pick up passengers at Volkswagen bus stop, inward Mile 2, Lagos.

The fatal crash involved a Toyota Highlander with registration number APP 150 EY and a painted T4 commercial bus marked KJA 328 XH.

According to eyewitnesses, the Highlander, reportedly on high speed, lost control and rammed into the stationary bus with a high impact that the driver died on the spot.

Operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, arrived at the scene minutes later, recovered the victim’s remains from the wreckage, and handed the body over to the Ojo Police Division before it was deposited at the C-Niger Mortuary, Abule Ado.

The accident triggered severe gridlock along the busy Mile 2 corridor. However, LASTMA officers quickly evacuated the damaged vehicles to restore traffic flow and later moved them to the Ojo Police Division for investigation.

LASTMA’s General Manager, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, while sympathising with the deceased’s family, condemned reckless driving and the persistent practice of commercial drivers picking up passengers along the highway.

He urged strict compliance with designated bus stops, stressing that human life must not be endangered by careless road use.

“The sanctity of human life must never be compromised by recklessness on our highways. We will continue to strengthen enforcement and intensify public enlightenment campaigns to curb preventable tragedies,” Bakare-Oki stated.
