“Space Technology Important for Nigeria’s Development” – Minister Declares
The Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Chief Uche Geoffrey Nnaji, has reiterated the crucial role of space technology in driving national growth, citing its transformative potential in addressing global challenges such as climate change, natural resource management, and disaster response.
Speaking at the 25th Anniversary of the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) in Abuja, Chief Nnaji celebrated the agency’s commitment to leveraging space technology for the advancement of Nigeria.
He noted that the anniversary symbolizes the nation’s vision, perseverance, and dedication to harnessing the vast possibilities of space for national development.
“Space technology offers solutions to many of the world’s most pressing issues. It is essential to our future,” Nnaji stated.
He also highlighted that the space sector is projected to generate over 60% of the new economic value from space-enabled technologies in Nigeria, noting that the World Economic Forum forecasts the global space economy to reach a staggering $1.8 trillion by 2035, largely driven by advancements in satellite technology.
The Minister pointed out that space technology’s impact goes far beyond the aerospace sector, influencing industries such as supply chain logistics, agriculture, defence, and digital communications.
“Space technology is no longer an abstract pursuit; it is an integral part of our everyday lives,” Nnaji emphasized.
“Satellite sensors and space-based infrastructure are shaping the modern world and will continue to do so, driving profound changes in the future,” he added.
Chief Nnaji also commended the efforts of NASRDA, the Defence Space Administration, and the Nigerian Communication Satellite Limited for their collective work in advancing the country’s space capabilities, noting that the collaboration exemplifies the spirit of teamwork necessary to achieve success in the sector.
Recall that the minister recently emphasized the crucial role of biotechnology in ensuring food security, enhancing crop yields, and improving agricultural practices in Nigeria.
Speaking at the International Conference on Biotechnology organized by the National Biotechnology Research and Development Agency in Abuja, Nnaji highlighted the potential of biotechnology to drive economic growth and address pressing challenges in agriculture and beyond.
He called for comprehensive public education campaigns to dispel misconceptions and enlighten the public about the benefits of biotechnology.
