South Korea’s Han Kang Awarded 2024 Nobel Prize in Literature

The Swedish Academy praised Han Kang’s ability to give voice to victims of history, particularly in her novel based on the 1980 Gwangju massacre.
“In seeking to give voice to the victims of history, the book confronts this episode with brutal actualisation and, in so doing, approaches the genre of witness literature,” the Swedish Academy said.
Her style deviates from traditional witness literature, permitting the souls of the dead to witness their own annihilation.
