File Photo: A child who sustained brain damage resulting from cerebral spinal meningitis is seen at the Save the Children stabilisation ward in Maiduguri, Nigeria.

The Kebbi State Government has confirmed that 26 people have died following a suspected outbreak of cerebrospinal meningitis in Aliero, Gwandu, and Jega local government areas.

The confirmation comes shortly after the Sokoto State Government urged residents to stay alert due to a rise in suspected meningitis cases in some local government areas.

The Information/Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Health, Nura Maikwanci, on Tuesday, disclosed that laboratory tests have confirmed several cases of the disease.

He said, “To curb its spread, the Ministry has intensified surveillance, case management, and public health interventions.

“We called on residents to take preventive measures, including seeking immediate medical attention if they experience symptoms such as fever, severe headache, or neck stiffness.”

Cerebrospinal meningitis is a severe infection that inflames the protective membranes of the brain and spinal cord. It is typically caused by bacteria or viruses and can be transmitted from person to person.

Symptoms include fever, severe headache, neck stiffness, nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light. If untreated, the disease can lead to severe complications or death.
