Seven Injured in Lagos Multiple-Vehicle Collision
At least seven passengers sustained severe injuries on Thursday following a multi-vehicle collision involving two commercial buses and a Lexus 330 Jeep.
The accident occurred along Lejina inward Adamo on the Sabo-Itokin Express Road in Lagos State.
Emergency responders from the Lagos State Ambulance Services (LASAMBUS) rushed the injured victims to the General Hospital in Ikorodu for immediate medical attention.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Adebayo Taofiq, attributed the crash to reckless driving by the Lexus driver.
According to him, the driver attempted an unlawful overtaking manoeuvres when he suddenly encountered an oncoming heavy truck. In an effort to re-enter his lane, he lost control and collided with two fully loaded commercial buses.
“Preliminary findings indicate that the driver of the Lexus Jeep, who absconded immediately after the incident, engaged in a perilous and unlawful overtaking maneuver on the highway.
“Upon suddenly encountering an oncoming heavy truck, he attempted a desperate re-entry into his lane but lost control, violently colliding with the two fully loaded commercial buses.
“In an expeditious response, LASTMA personnel, in synergy with security operatives from the Area N Police Division, swiftly secured the accident scene, managed traffic disruptions, and facilitated the full evacuation of the wrecked vehicles to restore normalcy,” Adebayo said.
Reacting to the incident, the General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed sympathy for the victims and wished them a swift recovery.
He urged motorists to exercise extreme caution, especially when overtaking, and to adhere strictly to traffic regulations to prevent such tragedies.
“The government has strategically positioned road signs to guide motorists and ensure orderliness on our highways.
“It is imperative that drivers exercise utmost vigilance and confirm absolute clearance before attempting to overtake, as recklessness on the road can have devastating consequences,” Bakare-Oki stated.
