Seun Kuti: Buhari Dealt With My Family, But His Death Not Justice For The Kuti's

Afrobeat singer Seun Kuti has expressed his sadness over the death of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, saying that although Buhari “dealt with my family,” his old age does not mean “justice or victory” for the Kuti family.

In a recent video that has gone viral on social media, Seun Kuti—the youngest son of renowned Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti—expressed his feelings.

He said that although Muhammadu Buhari lived long enough to ensure his children’s financial future, many of his family members who were “better men” than him died before him.

Seun added, “That an old man has died in old age after using our blood to secure the financial future of his generations is not something I would consider justice.”

He further elaborated on his perspective, noting, “Natural death is not justice for crime against our country and crime against humanity. His children and grandchildren will enjoy their lives for the rest of their existence.”

His comments highlight the historical background and long-standing frustrations of the Kuti family’s turbulent history with previous military governments in Nigeria, including that of late President Muhammadu Buhari.

The history of activism and resistance against military dictatorship in Nigeria by the Kuti family is strongly reflected in this remark. When Buhari was the military head of state in the 1980s, Fela Kuti, an outspoken opponent of succeeding administrations, was arrested and persecuted on multiple occasions.
