Senate Approves Tinubu’s Emergency Rule In Rivers

The Senate has approved President Bola Tinubu’s emergency rule declaration in Rivers State.

The upper legislative chamber sustained the six-month duration of the emergency rule, adding however that the proclamation could be reviewed or terminated before its expiration if the need warrants it.

Ruling on the ratification, Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, said part of the decision was for the two chambers of the National Assembly to set up an ad hoc committee to oversee the administration in Rivers State during the emergency rule.

The Senate also called for the setting up of a high-powered committee to mediate in the Rivers political crisis while the emergency rule subsists.

It added that the committee must be made up of eminent Nigerians with proven integrity.

Like the House of Representatives, which approved the request earlier, the Senate also passed Tinubu’s emergency proclamation by voice vote.

There was no open debate on the matter as Akpabio only read out the resolutions reached at a closed session, which lasted for two hours.
