Security: Southwest Governors To Establish Joint Surveillance Team

The Southwest Governors’ Forum has resolved to establish a Joint Surveillance and Monitoring Team to enhance security coordination across the region.

This initiative, the governors said, is a direct response to the rising threats posed by Islamic State’s West Africa Province (ISWAP) and other criminal groups, whose activities endanger the peace and stability of the Southwest.

The forum also condemned the exploitative practices of middlemen in the food supply chain, blaming them for the soaring food prices in the region.

To address this, they agreed to implement an Inter-State Monitoring Team to regulate pricing and curb arbitrary increases. Additionally, each state will set up a Food Logistics Hub as part of broader efforts to ensure food security.

Lagos State Governor and chairman of the forum, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, announced these resolutions while reading the communiqué issued at the end of their meeting in Ikeja, Lagos, on Thursday.

“The forum agreed to appoint special advisors on security in each state and to establish a joint surveillance monitoring team, which we believe will oversee and coordinate security efforts across the region,” Sanwo-Olu stated.

“And as part of the resolution, the forum has committed to deploying advanced technology, including area surveillance systems that will enhance security operations.

“Additionally, the forum resolved to strengthen intelligence gathering by fostering a collaboration between our state security operatives, local security networks and, of course, the federal enforcement authorities.”

The meeting was attended by Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa (Ondo), Dapo Abiodun (Ogun), Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Ademola Adeleke (Osun), and Biodun Oyebanji (Ekiti).
