Kenya’s Sabastian Sawe produced a stunning performance to win the men’s London Marathon on Sunday.

Sawe pulled away from a leading group of nine runners about 90 minutes into the race, and finished in 2 hours, 2 minutes and 27 seconds.

He pulled further away from his competitors after they decided to stop by at a drink station but he opted not to take any water despite warm temperatures.

Uganda’s Jacob Kiplimo, the half marathon world record holder finished second with 70 seconds behind Sawe.

He is the fourth Kenyan runner in a row to win the men’s race in London.

Sawe revealed that his victory at the London Marathon will inspire him to aim for more success in the future.

He said: “It does give me hope that in the future, the marathon will be so important to me, and be so easy for me.

“I think the secret is training well, with discipline and focus, and trusting the process.”

In the women’s race, Tigst Assefa of Ethiopia secured her first London Marathon title, and set a new world record after pulling away from Joyciline Jepkosgei near the end.

Assefa steered clear of 2021 winner Joyciline Jepkosgei of Kenya with 10km to go before crossing the line in two hours 15 minutes 50 seconds.

She beat the previous record set by Peres Jepchirchir of Kenya in London last year, by 26 seconds.

Assefa finished second both in London, and at the Paris Olympics last year but she has now added the title to two Berlin Marathon wins.
