Sanwo-Olu Congratulates Meranda On Becoming First Female Speaker Of Lagos Assembly

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Monday congratulated Rt. Hon. Mojisola Meranda on her historic election as the first female Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.

Sanwo-Olu extended his congratulations during a courtesy visit by the new Speaker and Principal Officers of the House at Lagos House, Ikeja.

The governor accompanied Meranda and her delegation to the Council Chamber, where both the Speaker and members of the State Executive Council pledged to maintain a harmonious working relationship between the legislative and executive arms of government in Lagos State.

The Principal Officers who joined the Speaker on the visit included the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Mojeed Fatai, representing Ibeju-Lekki I; the Majority Leader, Hon. Temitope Adedeji, representing Ifako Ijaiye I; the Deputy Majority Leader, Hon. Richard Kasunmu, representing Ikeja II; the Chief Whip, Hon. David Setonji, representing Badagry II; and the Deputy Chief Whip, Hon. Sanni Babatunde, representing Kosofe I.

Sanwo-Olu described Meranda’s emergence as the 44-year-old first female Speaker as well-deserved and commendable.

It would be recalled that Meranda was elected Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly last Monday, following the impeachment of her predecessor, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, over allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of power.

Prior to her elevation, Meranda, who represents Apapa Constituency 1, served as the Deputy Speaker.

Last Tuesday, she met with the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), the apex decision-making body of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State.

Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Meranda explained that the engagement was to update the GAC on recent developments in the assembly and secure their endorsement.

“We briefed them about what transpired at the House of Assembly yesterday and sought their blessings, which we have received,” she said.
