Samsung Co-CEO, Han Jong-Hee, Dies At 63
Samsung Electronics co-CEO, Han Jong-Hee, passed away at the age of 63 due to cardiac arrest on Tuesday, a company spokesperson announced.
In an internal memo seen by CNN, Samsung highlighted Han’s leadership contributions in driving the company’s electronics and appliances divisions through challenging times.
“Our deepest condolences are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time,” the company stated.
Born in 1962, Han dedicated over 37 years to Samsung, playing a key role in establishing its TV business as a global leader. He was appointed vice chairman and CEO in 2022, overseeing the company’s consumer electronics and mobile divisions.
His co-CEO, Jun Young-Hyun, who was recently named to the position, will now serve as Samsung’s sole CEO.
The company has struggled to keep pace with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) in the logic chip sector.
As a result of its change in fortune, Samsung has fallen behind South Korean rival SK Hynix in high-bandwidth memory (HBM) technology needed for AI-driven processors.
At an investor meeting last week, which Han chaired, he apologised for the company’s stock performance and warned of economic uncertainties in 2025.
He also emphasised Samsung’s commitment to mergers and acquisitions to drive future growth.
“Despite regulatory challenges, we are determined to achieve meaningful results this year,” he said.
Han joined Samsung in 1988 after earning a degree in electrical engineering from Inha University.
Prior to his leading role in the company’s electronics and devices department, he served in its display operations, such as LED TVs.
