Romero Signs New Tottenham Contract
Tottenham captain Cristian Romero has signed a new four-year deal to extend his stay at the club until 2029.
The Argentina defender joined the club from Atalanta in 2021, and has gone on to make 126 appearances while also winning the Europa League last season.
He was linked with a move away from the club at the end of the season but he was named club captain by new head coach Thomas Frank.
Romero expressed his desire to win more silverware at North London.
He said: “We want to win. Maybe why not win again this season? Another trophy with the club is important for everyone.
“For me this club is the best in the world. The last two weeks, first [being appointed] captain and now signing the contract with the club – for me it’s a fantastic decision.”
Romero captained Tottenham for the final four matches in the Europa League last season, winning the competition’s Player of the Season award. He was named Player of the Match in the Final while he also earned a place in the 2024/25 UEFA Europa League Team of the Season alongside team-mates Guglielmo Vicario, Pedro Porro, and Dominic Solanke.
At international level, he made his senior debut for Argentina in a World Cup qualifier against Chile in June, 2021, and now has 44 caps to his name for La Albiceleste, scoring three times.
He has enjoyed huge success with Argentina, helping his country to the 2021 and 2024 Copa America titles, the CONMEBOL-UEFA Cup of Champions and, most notably, World Cup glory at Qatar 2022.
Romero led Tottenham to a 3-0 win over Burnley in their opening game of the season on Saturday, he will be hoping to lead the team to another victory against Manchester City at the Etihad next Saturday.
