Rivers govt threatens to terminate waste contractors over poor defuse management

The Rivers State Government has issued a stern warning to waste contractors across the state, threatening to terminate their contracts over what it described as their unsatisfactory performance in refuse evacuation.

In a statement on Wednesday by Hector Igbikiowubo, Senior Special Adviser on Media to the State Administrator, contractors were urged to step up their waste management efforts or face serious consequences.

Igbikiowubo emphasized that the administration, led by retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, would not tolerate any neglect that results in parts of the state being defaced by waste or exposes citizens to health hazards.

According to the statement, “Contractors who fail to meet their contractual obligations in evacuating refuse promptly and efficiently will have their agreements revoked with extreme prejudice.

“This decisive action underscores the administration’s commitment to maintaining a clean, healthy, and aesthetically pleasing environment for all residents.”

To strengthen waste disposal efforts, the government said it has reactivated an abandoned pit for use as an additional dump site and is currently working on upgrading the site located along the Airport Access Road.

Igbikiowubo added that these initiatives aim to improve waste management capacity and streamline operations in line with international standards.

The government also reminded residents of their role in maintaining environmental cleanliness.

The statement encouraged residents to use designated waste disposal sites and follow proper dumping methods to preserve the hygiene and beauty of the state.

He added, “Furthermore, citizens are encouraged to report any uncollected refuse that remains unattended for more than 48 hours to the appropriate authorities. This will enable swift government intervention and ensure that contractors are held accountable for lapses in service delivery.

“The Rivers State Government reaffirms its zero-tolerance policy toward inefficiency in public service delivery, particularly in critical sectors like waste management.

“This administration remains committed to enforcing strict compliance with contractual terms and will not hesitate to blacklist and replace underperforming contractors where necessary,” he added.

The statement concluded by highlighting that environmental sanitation is a collective responsibility, urging government agencies, contractors, and the public to work together to ensure that Port Harcourt and its surrounding areas remain “safe and sustainable for present and future generations.”
