The Rivers State Central Working Committee on Flood Management and Control has announced a sensitization programme scheduled for Zone 3 of the state.

The programme aims to educate residents on flood preparedness and mitigation strategies, particularly in areas prone to flooding.

The State is one of the areas at elevated risk of flooding this year, with 148 local government areas across 31 states expected to be affected nationwide.

The state government has been working to establish a State Emergency Management Agency to institutionalize disaster preparedness and response

In light of the impending flood season, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has been conducting simulation exercises in flood-prone communities to raise awareness and strengthen coordinated response mechanisms.

The sensitization programme is expected to enhance community awareness and preparedness for floods, ultimately reducing the risk of damage and casualties.

The sensitization programme will cover the following LGAs in Zone 3: Andoni, Opobo/Nkoro, Khana, Gokana, Eleme, Tai, Oyigbo.

Others include; Emohua, Bonny, Etche, Degema, Ogu/Bolo, and Obio/Akpor.

LGA Chairmen, chiefs, community representatives, women, and youth groups from the affected LGAs are expected to attend the programme. This initiative is part of the state government’s efforts to mitigate the impact of flooding and ensure the safety of residents.

The sensitization is expected to begin on Monday, September 8, 2025 at Khana Local Government Council Secretariat Headquarters, Khana by 11:00 am
