Rivers Government To Address Shortage Of Teachers
The Chairman of the Rivers State Basic Education Board, Hon. Sam Ogeh has expressed the government’s commitment to addressing the shortage of teachers in the state’s basic education sector.
During an inspection of public schools in Port Harcourt, Ogeh announced plans to transfer teachers from overstaffed schools to those with low numbers of teachers, particularly in rural communities.
This, according to him, aims to ensure equitable distribution of teachers across schools in the state, improving the quality of education and providing students with the necessary support to excel academically.
Ogeh frowned upon the low turnout of teachers in some schools and directed that absent teachers be transferred to their community schools.
“The government will not tolerate absenteeism among teachers,” he emphasized. This move, he said, is expected to improve teacher accountability and ensure that students receive the attention they need to succeed.
The chairman also condemned the destruction and theft of school properties at Township School, opposite the Alfred Diete Spiff Sports complex. He warned that the government would not tolerate such acts and would take necessary measures to prevent future occurrences.
Ogeh’s reaction to the vandalism was emotional, as he was reportedly moved to tears by the extent of the destruction.
Ogeh also directed retired staff and teachers still occupying school quarters to vacate the premises within seven days.
This move aims to ensure that school facilities are used for their intended purpose and to prevent unauthorized occupation.
During the inspection, Ogeh visited several schools, including Government Comprehensive Secondary School Borikiri, Township School, Army Day School Rainbow, and CSS Nkpolu Oroworukwo
The inspection was part of the government’s efforts to assess the state of education in Rivers State and identify areas that require improvement.
