Reps intervene in UniAbuja leadership crisis, halt new VC selection process

The House of Representatives Committee on University Education has intervened in the leadership tussle in the University of Abuja.

Chairman, House Committee on University Education, Abubakar Hassan Fulata appealed to the various parties to embrace dialogue in order to ensure stable academic activities.

Fulata made this known following his committee’s meeting with the outgoing acting Vice Chancellor of University of Abuja, Prof. Patricia Lar.

Fulata said following petitions over the sacking of some vice chancellors of universities as well as dissolution of some governing councils of universities early this year, the committee took a step further to investigate whether due process was followed.

The acting Vice Chancellor of University of Abuja, Lar, who said she has less than one month to complete the six months period, told the committee that her mandate is to allow a new substantive vice chancellor of the university to emerge.

The committee however urged Lar and other relevant stakeholders to put on-hold all processes that will lead to emergence of the new VC until controversies resulting to leadership tussle are addressed.

Fulata noted that the committee is completely against anything that will affect the calendar and smooth running of the university system.

In the same vein, Fulata noted that the House Committee on University Education has taken a step to intervene on the revocation of about 11,000 hectares of land belonging to the University of Abuja by the Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Nelson Wike.

Fulata noted that the decision of his committee was sequel to a petition by the University of Abuja Alumni Association seeking intervention of the parliament.

According to Fulata, the association noted that FCT minister seized 11,000 hectares of land from University of Abuja while leaving the school with only 4,000 hectares.
