Realignment as Abia PDP grassroots mobilizer, Igbokwe meets Abure, may join LP

Factional National Chairman of the Labour Party, Julius Abure, has held a closed-door meeting with the 2023 Abia PDP governorship aspirant, Mayor Lucky Igbokwe in Abuja, sparking speculation of Igbokwe’s entrance into LP.

The meeting, which was held in Abuja on Thursday, was attended by the former Abia State Chairman of LP and now the National Vice Chairman, South East, Ceekay Igara.

It was also attended by the immediate past member of Abia State House of Assembly, Kelechi Onuzuruike of Umuahia North constituency.

The Thursday meeting, though still sketchy, has sparked strong speculations about a possible political alignment ahead of the 2027 governorship election in Abia State.

Mayor Igbokwe, who is popularly known as Don Lulu, came second in the 2023 PDP governorship primaries in Abia, and has remained a prominent figure in the state’s political space.

Also, political analysts in Abia are suggesting that the Labour Party, which gained momentum in the 2023 general elections, may again be positioning itself early by engaging influential politicians like Igbokwe to deepen grassroots support and youth appeal.

“If Mayor Lucky Igbokwe joins LP as suggested by his meeting with our National Chairman Julius Abure, it will be a game changer in Abia elections for 2027”, Okoro Zebulon, a member of the LP reacted on Saturday.

However, the meeting comes at a time when the Labour Party is still grappling with an internal leadership crisis with Julius Abure and Governor Alex Otti’s camp, led by Usman Nenadi, still laying claims to the LP national leadership.
