Quackery endangering integrity of buildings, safety of citizens – Nwifuru

Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, played host to the 55th Builders’ Conference and Annual General Meeting of the Nigerian Institute of Building (NIOB), a gathering that attracted professionals across the country.

Speaking on the conference theme, “Advancing Builders’ Knowledge and Skills for Effective Enforcement of Building Regulatory Laws for Sustainable Development,” Governor Nwifuru expressed concern over the growing infiltration of the profession by untrained individuals.

He warned that such practices endanger the integrity of buildings and the safety of citizens, citing recurring cases of building collapse nationwide.

Governor Nwifuru challenged the leadership of the NIOB to intensify efforts in eliminating quackery from the profession, urging builders to take the lead in driving sustainable urban renewal projects, climate-resilient structures, and a culture of maintenance that would reduce waste and extend the lifespan of infrastructure.

He further charged members of the Institute to uphold professional ethics with zero tolerance for sabotage and corruption, stressing that transparency and accountability are key to building public trust.

He also emphasized synergy among builders and allied professionals to ensure quality and safety in line with global best practices and technological advancement.

Highlighting the statutory role of the NIOB, the governor encouraged the Institute to sponsor stringent bills at the National Assembly aimed at strengthening regulatory frameworks in the sector.

He also called for continuous research, innovation, and capacity development to adopt emerging technologies, sustainable materials, and smart construction methods.

Governor Nwifuru, however, assured that his administration would continue to provide an enabling environment for building expertise to thrive in Ebonyi State, while urging other states to do the same.

Delivering goodwill messages, the Deputy Governor of Anambra State, Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezim, who represented Governor Charles Soludo, and the Deputy Governor of Enugu State, Barr. Ifeanyi Ossai, who represented Governor Peter Mbah, along with other dignitaries, urged professional builders to focus not only on durability but also on addressing Nigeria’s pressing need for affordable housing.

The 55th Builders’ Conference reinforced the collective resolve of professionals and policymakers to reposition the building industry for sustainable development, quality assurance, and public safety across the nation.
