Pumas UNAM Target Super Eagles Star Kelechi Iheanacho in Surprise Transfer Move
Nigerian international Kelechi Iheanacho is allegedly in talks to join Mexican top-division team Pumas UNAM in a surprise transfer move that could send the attacker to Liga MX.
The 27-year-old’s contract with Leicester City expired at the end of the previous season, and Pumas has shown great interest in bringing him to Mexico, according to people familiar with the negotiations.
Iheanacho is now a free agent, which makes him a desirable choice for teams looking to add proven offensive potency without having to pay a transfer fee.
The Super Eagles attacker, who moved from Manchester City to Leicester in 2017, helped the Foxes win the FA Cup in 2021 and scored other important goals while he was at the King Power Stadium.
However, Iheanacho’s importance diminished following Leicester’s 2023 Premier League relegation and subsequent Championship season.
Although Pumas is reportedly at the forefront of the pursuit, the Nigerian has also been linked to teams in Europe and the Middle East, so the Mexican powerhouses may face competition for his services.
Iheanacho would be among the most well-known African players to play in Liga MX if he moved to Mexico, giving Pumas’ attack more star power as they aim to win trophies in the forthcoming campaign.
