Protecting Canada’s Independence My Top Priority – Trudeau

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said he will prioritize his country’s independence in his discussions with King Charles on Monday.

His remarks come in response to recent comments by former U.S. President Donald Trump, who suggested that Canada should become the 51st U.S. state.

Speaking ahead of his meeting with Charles, who remains Canada’s head of state, Trudeau reaffirmed his commitment to national sovereignty.

“I look forward to sitting down with His Majesty tomorrow. As always, we will discuss issues that matter to Canada and Canadians, and I can tell you that nothing is more important than standing up for our sovereignty and independence,” Trudeau told reporters.

King Charles had extended an invitation to Trump in what would mark a historic second state visit to Britain. U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer personally delivered his majesty’s invitation during a high-profile meeting with Trump in the Oval Office on Thursday.

Trudeau, who recently announced that he will not seek re-election, warned that Trump’s remarks about incorporating Canada into the U.S. should not be taken lightly, particularly given the country’s vast natural resources.

Trump has repeatedly claimed that Canada would benefit immensely from becoming part of the U.S.

Trudeau has also affirmed his stance on Ukraine, declaring his support for the country and its President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
