The Zonal Director, National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NCCSALW), North Central Zone, DDG Abdul Adamu Eneche, has disclosed that porous borders and the activities of blacksmiths and local manufacturers of small arms contribute to insecurity in the country.

Enenche, who stated this in his remarks during a courtesy visit to the Niger State Commissioner of Police, CP Adamu Abdullahi Elleman, in Minna, said the challenges requires collaborative efforts.

He explained that the Centre, which comprises personnel of the military, police and Department of State Services, was established to ensure and promote an illicit arms-free society.

According to him, “The violent crimes threatening national security are being driven by the proliferation of small arms and that is the reason for establishing the centre.”

He noted that the Centre was established in 2021 to collaborate in tackling the security challenges.

While appreciating the CP for creating the time to receive them despite the short notice, Eneche acknowledged the efforts of the police in internal security and its critical role to the Centre in terms of seizure of arms at various local levels.

The CP, Elleman, in his response, assured the Centre of maximum support, cordial working relationship and seamless synergy.

He stressed that the police will always rise to the occasion and render the necessary assistance when called upon while advocating for inter-agency training of personnel to improve service delivery and educate each other on organisational objectives and modus operandi.

The CP further assured of the rendition of quarterly reports to the Centre.
