Police nabs 30 suspects for possession of weapons, drugs in Niger

The Niger State Police Command has arrested 30 suspects for various offences including possession of dangerous weapons, illicit drugs, thuggery, and armed robbery during coordinated raids on criminal hideouts and blackspots across the state.

According to a statement from the Police Public Relations Officer, eight suspects were apprehended in the Gulu area of Lapai Local Government based on credible intelligence indicating their involvement in the trade and use of illegal substances. The suspects were found in possession of suspected cannabis, cannabis seeds, amulets, alcoholic drinks, tobacco, and other illicit drugs, as well as weapons such as machetes, knives, sickles, and clubs. They are currently in custody and will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.

The statement also confirmed the arrest of 22 other suspects in the Tunga area of Minna during a separate operation. This followed recent disturbances around the Kafintella-Samande axis, where rival groups reportedly clashed over illegal mining activities on June 29, 2025. Following a swift response by the Divisional Police Officer of Tudun-Wada, one individual, Salisu Kabiru, was arrested and later identified several other suspects involved in the unrest.

Subsequent raids carried out on July 5 and 6 led to the arrest of additional suspects. Recovered items included four motorcycles, several cutlasses and knives, as well as quantities of cannabis and other illegal substances.

While all suspects remain in custody as investigations continue, the police have assured the public that those found culpable will be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
