The Niger State Police Command has killed suspected armed robber along the Abuja-Kaduna highway and recovered a wooden-carved weapon fashioned like an AK-47 rifle.
This was disclosed in a statement on Tuesday by the command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun, in Minna.
According to the statement, the incident occurred on June 16 at about 5:30 a.m. when police operatives from the Gawu-Babangida Division, on routine patrol with soldiers, intercepted a group of suspected armed robbers along the highway. A gun battle ensued, during which one of the suspects was fatally shot, while others escaped with gunshot wounds.
Items recovered from the scene include a wooden imitation of an AK-47 rifle, a mobile phone with a SIM card, and charms tied to the deceased suspect’s waist.
Abiodun noted that the recovered phone is currently being analysed in a bid to apprehend the fleeing members of the gang.
The statement noted that the corpse has been deposited at the Sabon-Wuse General Hospital morgue.
In a separate development, the police also intervened to rescue a man from a lynch mob in Minna after he was accused of attempting to steal a Bajaj motorcycle near the General Hospital.
Abiodun stated that the incident occurred on June 16 at about 4:00 p.m. A distress call was received at the ‘A’ Division in Minna, which prompted the Divisional Police Officer and his team to swiftly intervene.
The suspect, whose identity has not been disclosed but is said to reside in Barkin-Sale, was found in possession of the motorcycle he allegedly attempted to steal. He was rescued from the angry mob and taken into custody.
“Investigation is ongoing, and the suspect will be charged to court upon its conclusion,” Abiodun added.
The police urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities, while cautioning against taking the law into their own hands.
