The Lagos State Police Command has dismissed reports claiming that a cultist was killed by a man of northern origin in the Ebute Metta area of Lagos.

Naija Confra, a handle on X (formerly Twitter) known for sharing cult-related news, alleged in a post on Saturday that members of a particular cult group were planning to retaliate after one of their members was reportedly stabbed and killed by a northerner.

According to the post, tension had been building for days, culminating in the cultist’s death on Saturday.

In response, members of the group were allegedly seen attempting to retaliate.

“Earlier today, we reported that suspected cultists were seen with weapons around Evans Square, Ebute Metta, Lagos—some holding axes and one with a gun. Naija Confra can now confirm that the cultists are Aye (NBM) cultists, reportedly planning to retaliate the k!ll!ng of an Aye cultist by an Aboki man,” the post read.

“Sources confirmed to Naija Confra that the clash is between Aye (NBM) and Aboki. The issue has been ongoing for days. Yesterday, an Aye cultist was st@bbed by an Aboki and was confirmed de@d today. After the news of his de@th spread, his fellow Aye cultists were seen earlier today trying to retaliate.

“In our earlier report, we alerted the Lagos State Police, and residents reported that the DPO of Adekunle has been called in to handle the situation. Despite this, there is still fear that things could escalate. Everyone must stay informed. Stay safe. Reject Cultism.”

In response to the allegations, the Command’s spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, clarified that the incident was a clash between commercial tricycle (keke) riders and some youths, not an ethnically motivated killing.

He stated that no life was lost in the incident, which he attributed to miscreants and hoodlums who exploited the situation.

“The Lagos State Police Command wishes to inform the general public that on 17 May 2025, at about 12:30 p.m., officers of the Adekunle Division received a distress call reporting a clash between some commercial tricycle (keke) riders and some youths at Evans Square, Ebute Metta,” Hundeyin said.

“Consequently, Police Patrol Teams,Tactical Squads, and other Police detachments and Operatives responded swiftly to the distress and were able to promptly restore normalcy. One individual who sustained injuries during the chaos was rescued and immediately taken to a nearby hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment and is recovering well.”

He confirmed that three suspects involved in the disturbance were arrested and are currently in custody. They will be arraigned in court after the investigation is concluded.

The State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, has taken over the case following directives from the Commissioner of Police to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure all responsible parties are brought to justice.

Hundeyin emphasized that there was no ethnic violence and that the incident posed no threat to the peace and security of Lagos.

“The fracas leading to the disturbances of the peace in the mentioned location was caused by miscreants and hoodlums who took advantage of the situation and not on any ethnic divide or ground,” he added.

Hundeyin also urged parents and guardians to advise their children and wards to remain law-abiding and to avoid involvement in any activity that disturbs public peace.

He reassured residents that they can go about their daily activities without fear of harassment or intimidation.
