The Lagos State Police Command has announced the arrest of a notorious hired killer and gang leader, Wasiu Akinwande, popularly known as Olori Eso.

The 44-year-old suspect, described as the most wanted criminal in recent Lagos history, was captured on Friday by operatives of the Command’s Tactical Squad during a coordinated special operation codenamed “Silence, Speed and Surprise.”

He was arrested at his hideout in the Agbado area of Ogun State after years of evading law enforcement.

According to a statement on Friday night by the Command’s spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, Akinwande is the suspected mastermind behind a reign of terror that spanned more than a decade, from 2009 to 2024, particularly in the Mushin area of Lagos.

He is alleged to have led multiple gangs involved in cold-blooded murders, armed robberies, kidnappings, and cult-related killings, leaving communities in fear and families devastated.

The statement revealed that four families have already identified him as responsible for the killing of their loved ones.

Following his arrest, police operatives raided his residence in Mushin, where they recovered a large cache of sophisticated weapons and other incriminating items.

Items recovered include several rifles, pistols, live ammunition of various calibres, magazines, walkie-talkies, a dagger, and nine international passports belonging to different individuals. The police said the suspect confessed to using the weapons for his operations.

“Akinwande’s criminal activities have left trauma, horror, agony and pains in the families of victims of his numerous high-profile crimes under investigation by the Lagos State Police Command. Despite his escapes from one state of the country to another over the years, the Lagos State Police Command remained resolute in its pursuit of Justice,” the statement read.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police, State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), to lead a team of crack detectives to broaden the investigation and arrest all associates linked to Akinwande’s criminal network.

Jimoh commended the operatives for their courage and professionalism and reassured residents that the Command remains fully committed to protecting lives and property across the state.

Akinwande is currently in custody under tight security and will be prosecuted in accordance with the law. The Command has called on members of the public to remain vigilant and continue to support the police with credible information as investigations continue.
