The Kano State Police Command on Tuesday confirmed the arrest of 20-year-old Aliyu Umar in connection with a homicide that occurred in Danbare Quarters, Kano, late Monday, May 5, 2025.

The command’s public relations officer, SP Abdullahi Kiyawa, told THE WHISTLER that the incident resulted in the death of a 30-year-old man identified as Shehu Muhammad.

He said the deceased was attacked with a machete during an armed robbery activity in the community, where Umar and his partner (who is at large) had raided homes and made away with “five smartphones”.

According to him, the police were notified after Umar was apprehended by community residents, although his partner, an unidentified male, had escaped with the stolen phones.

He said, “The police received a distress call at about 6:40 am (Tuesday) from a resident in the area, reporting that two suspected armed robbers had invaded the home of one Shehu Muhammad, aged 30, and attacked him with a sharp cutlass, inflicting multiple injuries.

“The victim was immediately rushed to Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital for treatment, but was later pronounced dead by a medical doctor.

“The suspect is currently in custody and assisting with the ongoing investigation and will be charged in court upon the investigation’s completion.”

When asked about the fleeing suspect, Kiyawa said, “Although he is on the run, we will not rest until every criminal element is brought to justice.”

Kiyawa said the arrest was a strong signal to others who think they can terrorise innocent citizens.

According to him, “The community’s timely report was critical in apprehending the suspect. We urge residents to continue working with us to ensure a safer Kano.”

Earlier, the state Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Bakori, had said over 157 suspects had been apprehended following their involvement in various criminal activities in the state.

Bakori said the suspected criminals were involved in armed robbery, thuggery, thefts, illicit drug dealings and other violent crimes from 17th March 2025 to date.
